CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a disorder characterized by extreme and persistent fatigue that can't be explained by any underlying medical condition.

Its causes are unknown but contributing factors may include viruses, a weak immune system, stress and hormonal imbalances. A genetic predisposition is also a possible cause.

There are currently no blood test or other clear diagnostic marker for CFS diagnosis. Key part of considering a diagnosis is ruling out several other chronic illnesses which have overlapping symptoms to those of CFS such as Adrenal Fatigue, Addison Disease, Ehlers-Danlos (EDS), Lyme Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, etc. The lack of agreement about the symptoms increases the risk of a misdiagnosis.

There is also no specific cure for CFS to date. Different types of treatments are done for different symptoms. It is important to consult a doctor to create an appropriate treatment plan.

For months, Lavigne experienced inexplicable symptoms and was told she either had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Depression. She also claims to have been advised to play the piano to feel better.

"This is what they do to a lot of people that have Lyme disease. They don’t have an answer for them, so they tell them…’You’re crazy.'"

Despite having access to top healthcare providers and doctors, Lavigne was misdiagnosed several times before getting a correct diagnosis.

She has since then showed remarkable progress through proper treatment and has launched an awareness campaign through the Avril Lavigne Foundation.
